Through the years

  1. 1930s

Hard bop reaches back to older songs. Oleo borrows its from I Got Rhythm, which Gershwin wrote for the musical Girl Crazy, and Red Nichols and His Orchestra record that song in October 1930, one of its first jazz-style records.

  2. 1940s

Two 1946 recordings point ahead to tunes on this page. Kenny Clarke and His 52nd Street Boys record Royal Roost in September, the first recording of the melody Sonny Rollins later calls Tenor Madness, and an acetate from that year has Chuck Wayne playing a tune called Sonny, with a melody very like Solar's.

  3. 1950s

Miles Davis records Tune Up in 1953 and Four and Solar in 1954, and in June 1954 Sonny Rollins brings him Airegin, Oleo and Doxy. Clifford Brown records Joy Spring twice that year. Rollins makes Tenor Madness with John Coltrane and St. Thomas in 1956, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers cut Moanin' in 1958, and in 1959 Lambert, Hendricks & Ross sing Jon Hendricks's words to Airegin, Four and Moanin'.
